Albatross – for a score of three under the par for the hole

Birdie – for a score of one under par

Bogey – for a score of one over the par for a hole

Bunker – a sand hazard (like a big sand pit)

Caddie – a person who carries a player’s golf bag and offers advice

Chip – low running shot normally played from near the edge of the green


Divot – piece of grass removed by your club head when a shot is played

Dogleg – hole that changes direction midway , it can either turn to the left or turn to the right

Driver – club with a long shaft and little loft used for driving the ball a long distance

Eagle – for a score of two under the par for a hole


Fairway – area of closely mown (short grass) area between tee & green

Free drop – ball that is dropped without penalty in accordance with the Rules of Golf

Fore! – this word is shouted out loud as a warning when your ball is heading towards players or spectators

Green – area of very, very short grass specially made for putting, with a flagstick in a hole

Grip – how you hold your golf club


Iron - the club with a flat faced solid metal head most often used on the fairways

Lie – the spot where your ball lands

Par – estimated score for a hole, could be a par 3, par 4, par 5, depending on the length of the hole

Pitch – lofted shot onto a green

Putter – a club used to make the ball roll smoothly


Rough – area of longer, thicker grass next to the fairway

Sand bag – the bag which you keep sand in to fill up your divots

Sand wedge – not a cheese & tomato one! It is a club used to play out of the bunkers.

Tee – the area where you play the first shot on a hole

Tee peg – what you put the ball on before you play your first shot, usually wooden or plastic
